What Are the Essential Differences Between MEng and MSc Courses?


All students who want to study engineering abroad face a common dilemma. Would you choose an MEng or an MSc? If you asked an education counsellor the same thing, they’d say it doesn’t make much difference. Others may have told you that MEng is called MSc in some countries. However, if you take the time to do a little research, you’ll find that some universities offer master’s and bachelor’s programs. In other words, a master’s degree is not a substitute for a bachelor’s degree. Instead, they are different approaches to the same topic.

In Europe, MEng is considered a bachelor’s degree, and MSc is regarded as a postgraduate. MEng or ME is considered a postgraduate degree in the USA or India. In Europe, an MEng degree immediately qualifies you as a Chartered Engineer (if you pass an exam). If you are an international student who graduated in Europe, you can still apply for the Chartered Engineer exam. An alternative to admission as a Chartered Engineer is BEng + MSc. MEng is not considered a professional engineering degree like BEng + MSc.

The difference between MEngand MSc courses are as follows: –

MSc courses specialise in theory and research and are more research-oriented. MEng consists of technical coursework with an emphasis on applications.

It would be best if you worked on a dissertation to get a master’s degree. Depending on the university, a master’s program includes 2-3 prerequisite courses and a variety of electives to get specialised. So if you plan to promote it, you can get more profit. As categorised, Master’s programs have a broader scope.

MEng requires project-related collaboration and is narrowly designed around its subject matter, limiting its possibilities. It usually consists of 2-3 electives. Suitable for students who want to gain technical experience.

Learning from MEng course: –

  • No prior engineering knowledge is required if you are studying MEng as part of a four-year undergraduate program.
  • MEng course introduces you to engineering and offers a wide range of specialisations depending on the engineering field you wish to pursue. There are programs for everything from civil engineering to molecular engineering.
  • As a rule, courses combine units, projects and internships to give you comprehensive engineering knowledge.
  • You are also more likely to complete an industrial internship, which will give you hands-on experience in previously covered areas and the opportunity to acquire new skills.

Learning from MSc course: –

  • This course aims to provide participants with the broadest possible range of knowledge and practical skills.
  • While MEngs spend their time learning through lectures, the MSc program focuses on practical skills and allows you to apply what you know.
  • Like MEng, this course also will make you usually spend time on projects and internships.
  • Towards the end of this course, you’ll work on a dissertation in which you’ll have to solve an engineering problem independently. It shows that you can work independently as an engineer.


A Master’s degree raises the question of choosing between a Master of Science degree and a Master of Engineering degree. Master of Engineering and Master of Science programs share similarities but often have core areas.
